The Santa Fe River is a 120 km long river in northern Florida draining a watershed of 3,500 km2 spanning Columbia, Suwannee, Bradford, Baker, Union, Gilchrist, and Alachua counties. The headwaters of the river are Lake Santa Fe, near Keystone Heights. Slow flow combined with abundant leaf-drop from mostly Bald Cypress results in dark-brown river. The Santa Fe completely disappears underground dropping into a sinkhole in O'Leno State Park and then reappears 5 km downstream in River Rise Preserve State Park. The water temperature near the river's numerous springs is always near 72 °F (22 °C). The Santa Fe empties into the Suwannee River near Branford, Florida.
