Beidawu Mountain 北大武山
Though ranked 90 among Taiwan's highest peaks, Mt. Beidawu (or Kavulungan in Paiwan) at an elevation of 3092 meters is the highest peak of the central mountain range in the southern part of the island. Along with Jade mountain 玉山, Snow mountain 雪山, Nanhu mountain 南湖大山 and Xiuguluan mountain 秀姑巒山, BeiDawu mountain 北大武山 is one of the five representative high mountains of Taiwan. We will climb from 1550 m to 3092 m over 12 km and then back in one day. We spend the night in 屏東縣泰武鄉武潭村 30 minutes from the trail head and are walking at sunrise the next morning.
Arriving together at Kuaigu hut 檜谷山莊 in mid morning, Bruce decides to leave us to push along alone to make it to the peak.
Shinto shrine ruins
at the remains of the Shinto shrine we meet Bruce coming down from the peak an hour ahead at 12:45. Bruce continues down, and Peter and Philip decide to push on to the peak in cold rainy windy weather. The original shrine was built in 1931.
