Cape Barren Geese
Flock of thirty to forty geese grazing in windy, wet weather. Cape Barren Geese are classified as rare under the 1972 National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, this primitive form of goose was once considered an aberrant shelduck. This is one of their breeding grounds.

Tame Kangaroos and wallabies in the Visitors' Center parking lot. British explorer Matthew Flinders named the island after the kangaroos he and his crew discovered in 1802. The K.I. kangaroo is a darker, stockier subspecies of the western grey kangaroo on the mainland. Very common is the Tammar wallaby, they are now all but extinct on the mainland.

Rock River hike and Platypus Waterholes Walk, Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
We didn't see any platypuses, but the walk was beautiful and we enjoy a snack break of nuts and dried food on a platypus observation deck. The forest floor is rolling sandy soil and marshy in many areas. The trees are primarily "stringy bark" eucalyptus and sugar gums. Tea treas also grow in the marshy areas. The forest had a serious fire in 1958.

Koala watching at Hanson Bay

It is cold and breezy around the inactive farm and no other visitors are here. As we walk down the road and accustom ourselves, we slowly realize there is a koala in almost every tree. They seem lazy or sleepy but have each claimed a whole tree to themselves. 5 to 6 PM

John has a phone message from Carlos that his granddaughter, Laura was born in the early morning.

After buying breakfast and picnic supplies at the General Store we go across the street to the Penneshaw hotel bar for dinner as everything else is closed. As we walk back to the car, we hear sounds towards the beach that may be penguins. We drive towards the southeast corner of the island, where we will stay two nights at the restored lightkeepers' cottages at Cape Willoughby. Driving in the dark, the road becomes a rough limestone road with warnings of occasional flooding. There are few signs of people. After 27 kilometers, we arrive at the cape and beautifully restored lighthouse accommodations.

Rain in the early morning.
